What I collect, and why

I am one person who builds gardens. This page is written plainly, because you should be able to read it in two minutes and know exactly where your information goes. If anything here is unclear, email me and I will answer it myself.

What I collect

There are exactly three ways this site collects anything about you.

When you fill in the contact form

Your name, your email address, and whatever you choose to type into the two open questions: where the garden is going, and what you like to cook. Nothing on that form is required except a name and an email, and there is no phone number field. I use it to reply to you and to plan a site consultation. That is all.

When you sign up for Field Notes

Your email address, and nothing else. It is a double opt-in, which means signing up does not put you on the list. You are only subscribed once you click the link in the confirmation email, and if you never click it, nothing further is ever sent to you. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link that works without asking you to sign in or reply.

When you arrive from a link, a QR code, or a search

Your browser stores a small record of how you got here, and it stays on your own device until you clear it. It holds the campaign tags on the link you clicked, the page you landed on first, the site that referred you if there was one, and the referral code from a realtor card if you scanned one. It does not hold your name, your email address, or anything you typed. If you later fill in the contact form, that record is attached to your message so I know which garden sign, card, or article brought you. If you never fill in the form, it is never sent anywhere and it never leaves your device.

I want to be straight about that last one, because it is the part most sites bury: it is tracking. It is first-party, it is only about this site, it is not sold or shared, and no advertising network can read it. But it is tracking, and you are entitled to know it is there.

What I do not do
  • I do not sell your information. Not to anyone, for any price, ever.
  • I do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or partners.
  • I do not run advertising pixels, retargeting, or third-party analytics on this site.
  • I do not add you to the newsletter because you filled in the contact form. Those are two separate lists and one is opt-in only.
  • I do not send anything to a Field Notes address that has not confirmed itself.
Where it is stored

Four companies hold pieces of this on my behalf, and each one only sees the part it needs to do its job.

  • Supabase hosts the database where contact form messages and subscriber email addresses are stored.
  • Netlify serves this website and keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses, the way every web server has since the 1990s.
  • Resend delivers the confirmation and newsletter emails, so it handles the email addresses those go to.
  • Google provides my email and calendar, so if you and I end up corresponding, that correspondence lives there.

I keep contact form messages for as long as the conversation is useful, which for a garden project can be a few years, because people come back. Subscriber addresses stay until you unsubscribe.

Your say in it

Email me at chris@yeahthatgardenguy.com and I will do any of the following, at no cost and without asking you why.

  • Tell you everything I hold about you.
  • Correct anything that is wrong.
  • Delete all of it.
  • Take you off the newsletter, if the unsubscribe link is giving you trouble.

I aim to have it done within a week. It is usually the same day, because it is me reading the email.

To clear the arrival record your browser is holding, clear this site's data in your browser settings. Nothing on the site depends on it, so clearing it breaks nothing.

The small print

This site is not aimed at children and I do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13. If that has happened, tell me and I will delete it.

Pages here link out to other sites: news articles, the farmers market, the restaurant, the live garden dashboard, my social profiles. Once you follow one of those you are on somebody else's site under somebody else's policy, and I have no control over what they do.

If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change ever means I would be doing something materially different with information I already hold, I will email the people it affects rather than quietly editing this page.
